Kohima: Health and Family Welfare Secretary S. Tainiu addressed the 8th World Food Safety Day in Dimapur, highlighting that food safety is both an economic and social issue. Speaking at Hotel Saramati, Tainiu explained that foodborne illnesses place a significant strain on healthcare systems, families, and businesses.
The event was hosted by the Department of Health and Family Welfare alongside FSSAI and Eat Right India under the theme From Burden to Solutions: Safe Food Everywhere. Tainiu warned that millions of people fall ill every year from contaminated food, with children under five remaining the most at risk. She urged food handlers and hospitality staff to prioritize hygiene, safe sourcing, and proper storage practices to prevent health complications.
Dr. John Kemp, the state programme officer, discussed the need for science-based decision making and improved public surveillance. Vikie Nagi of the Nagaland Hotel and Restaurant Association expressed support for these initiatives, describing food safety as the "invisible backbone" of the hospitality industry.
The program concluded with practical training for stakeholders. Food technicians provided demonstrations on detecting food adulteration and maintaining sanitation standards, reinforcing the event's core message that safe consumption begins with clean hands.
