Guwahati: Heavy rain slammed Guwahati on Sunday, turning roads into rivers and forcing police to shuffle traffic. The 9th and 10th Mile areas bore the brunt of the rising water. It is a familiar mess for locals after similar flooding struck on Saturday evening.

Authorities locked down several routes to keep cars moving. Light motor vehicles heading into the city are now diverted at Digaru. Anyone trying to leave Guwahati gets rerouted at Koinadhora. Officials suggest commuters take the Narengi route to dodge the worst of the floods.

The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the region. Forecasters expect the downpour to continue. They estimate a "more than 50 per cent probability of continued rainfall" over the next few hours. Officials are watching the water levels closely. They want drivers to plan trips early and steer clear of flooded streets until the sun breaks through.
