Guwahati: Thunderstorms and relentless monsoon rain are battering Assam. Lightning strikes have already claimed five lives since May 21. Victims died in Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Golaghat, Udalguri, and Dibrugarh. The weather also killed six animals. Violent storms recently damaged homes and infrastructure in 31 villages across 11 revenue circles, including Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, and Hojai.
The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Dhubri and South Salmara. These areas face potential very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert remains in place for 22 other districts. This includes Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi. The warning also covers Morigaon, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup, Barpeta, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar.
Guwahati is drowning again. Heavy rain triggered severe waterlogging at the 9th and 10th Mile areas. Officials diverted light motor vehicles at Digaru and Koinadhora. Commuters received advice to use the Narengi route instead. The city expects more heavy rain in the next three days. Forecasts predict up to 12 centimeters of rain within 24 hours in some locations.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority is on high alert. They are monitoring hill slopes and low-lying zones for landslides and flash floods. Emergency response teams are standing by. "In view of the situation, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority requests all residents of Guwahati to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant," the agency stated in a recent advisory.
Officials urged employers to consider early releases for staff. Residents must avoid open fields during storms. Commuters should check official updates before traveling. Do not drive through flooded roads.
