Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a newly built flyover in Guwahati will be named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The decision serves as a tribute to the leader's historical role in preventing Assam from being included in East Pakistan during the 1947 Partition.
Sarma explained that the Muslim League had intended to incorporate the Northeast and parts of Bengal into East Pakistan at the time. Mookerjee worked alongside Gopinath Bordoloi to resist these plans, a move the Chief Minister credited with preserving the state's place within India. He noted that without their efforts, the current map of the country would look significantly different.
Beyond his political impact, the Chief Minister highlighted Mookerjee's dedication to local education. While serving as a Vice-Chancellor, Mookerjee advocated for using the Assamese language as a medium of instruction in schools. Sarma also recognized the contributions of Birinchi Kumar Barua, who helped strengthen higher education and language studies during that era. The project stands as both an infrastructure achievement and a historical landmark for the city.
