Guwahati Rock Musician Sumon Kalyan Dutta Dies at 59

Guwahati: Guwahati lost a rock icon. Sumon Kalyan Dutta, known to fans as SKD, died at his home Friday morning at age 59. Family members confirmed he passed away around 5:45 am following a short battle with health complications.

Dutta was a fixture in the local music scene for decades. He launched his career with Crystal Palace and later performed with Moonwind. He eventually formed his own group, SKD, and served as a member of the original lineup for the legendary band Friends. His electrifying stage presence helped shape the city's early western music culture.

Tributes poured in as news of his death spread across Assam. Assam Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia took to social media to mourn the loss of his close friend. "Extremely shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of my dear friend and immensely popular vocalist, Sumon Kalyan Dutta, this morning. Words fail to express the sense of loss," Saikia wrote.

Dutta earned respect for both his talent and his personality. He mentored countless young musicians throughout his life. Friends say his infectious smile and warmth will be missed by everyone who knew him.
