Guwahati: District Commissioner Swapneel Paul ordered a safety crackdown on Guwahati flyovers this week. He gathered heads from the police, transport, and public works departments to demand tighter oversight on road infrastructure. Officials will now inspect new city flyovers on a regular schedule.

The Maharaja Prithu Flyover, which links Noonmati and Dighalipukhuri, requires extra attention. Paul ordered agencies to watch the structure closely through the monsoon rains to keep traffic moving and prevent accidents. He also flagged open manholes across the city as death traps for motorists and pedestrians alike. He wants these hazards fixed immediately.

The committee discussed traffic flow near the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital and the restoration of roads torn up by excavation work. District Transport Officer Himangshu Kumar Das confirmed that tougher rules for drunk drivers are in the works. The transport department presented data on accident zones along national highways to prioritize road improvements.

Paul pushed for better teamwork between local agencies to cut down on road fatalities. He urged all staff to discharge their duties with focus. The message remains clear: coordinated work is the only way to save lives on the street. Officials also moved to crack down on bars operating without valid licenses.
