Guwahati: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has confirmed that Guwahati will be included in the initial phase of the national Water Metro expansion project. During a high-level review meeting in New Delhi, the Minister outlined plans to launch these modern waterway services in 18 cities across India to create sustainable and efficient public transport corridors.
Alongside Guwahati, the first phase of the rollout includes Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj. The Ministry has also proposed the inclusion of Tezpur and Dibrugarh, both located in Assam, for the second phase of the project. To support this initiative, the government has circulated the Draft National Water Metro Policy 2026 for inter-ministerial consultations to establish a robust national framework.
Minister Sonowal highlighted that the Water Metro system serves as a cost-effective alternative to conventional transit because it utilizes existing waterways, requiring minimal civil infrastructure. By promoting these eco-friendly transport routes, the government aims to reduce urban traffic congestion while providing commuters with a smoother and more scenic travel experience. The Ministry is actively seeking input from state governments to refine the draft policy and ensure the initiative is implemented effectively across the country.
