Guwahati: GST investigators in Assam have launched a major probe after intercepting a container truck suspected of being part of a tax evasion network. The vehicle, registered as HR-38AF-6708, was stopped at the Sagolia border crossing while traveling from Delhi toward Dimapur. Authorities flagged the shipment for failing to provide a mandatory E-Way Bill, a required digital document for all commercial goods valued over 50,000 rupees.
The driver presented a tax invoice dated May 3, 2026, which claimed the truck was carrying 150 units of Pan Masala and 30 units of Chewing Tobacco with a total value of 450,450 rupees. Investigators suspect the document was forged to hide the true contents of the shipment. Preliminary assessments suggest that the actual volume of goods inside the container significantly exceeds what was recorded on the invoice.
Initial penalties for these violations are estimated between 3.60 lakh and 7.20 lakh rupees. However, officials stated that the final liability will be confirmed only after a full physical inspection of the cargo. The investigation is now looking into the origin of the Delhi-based invoice and whether this shipment is part of a larger, systemic revenue fraud involving identity misuse along the Delhi to Guwahati transport corridor.
