Shillong: Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has announced a major initiative to build at least one heliport in every district across Northeast India. Speaking at the conclusion of the North East Infrastructure Summit (NEIINFRA 2026) in Shillong, Naidu stated that the project, supported by the revamped UDAN scheme, aims to improve last-mile connectivity, boost tourism, and stimulate the regional economy. He also confirmed ongoing infrastructure upgrades at Shillong Airport and the upcoming operationalisation of Tura Airport.

During his address, the minister noted that the region is currently experiencing a 13 per cent GDP growth rate, which is double the national average. Reflecting on this shift, Naidu remarked, "The time has now come for all of us to collectively change the narrative from 'Why North East?' to 'Why not North East?'"

Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the region has received over ₹6 lakh crore in public development expenditure over the last decade. He emphasized that recent investments in road, rail, and digital infrastructure have transformed the Northeast into a strategic economic corridor linking India with Southeast Asia. "The future of India's growth story cannot be complete without the northeastern states," Shekhawat said.

The two-day summit featured discussions on green energy, technology, and industrial growth while hosting over 1,500 delegates. Officials unveiled the Vision Report 2047, titled Ashtalakshmi, to serve as a roadmap for the development of the eight northeastern states. The event concluded with an awards ceremony for exhibitors, where Canboo was named the Champion Exhibitor, while Dak-ti Craft, Naira Travels, and Nela Handlooms were recognized for their contributions in the MSME category.
