Girijananda Chowdhury University Honors Hirak Jyoti Sarma for National Music Award

Guwahati: Girijananda Chowdhury University in Guwahati hosted a ceremony on Saturday to honor faculty member Hirak Jyoti Sarma. The university celebrated his selection for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2025, a national accolade established by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The award commemorates the legendary shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan by recognizing exceptional young artists under the age of 40. These recipients are honored for their significant contributions to music, dance, theatre, and traditional folk arts.

Sarma, who serves as a visiting faculty member in Assamese Language and Assamese Folk Music, performed during the event. Jasoda Ranjan Das, president of the SSA Society, presided over the gathering. The ceremony drew a full-capacity audience, including Chancellor Jayanta Deka, Vice-Chancellor Kandarpa Das, and Registrar Dipankar Saha. Deans representing the university's various academic departments also attended to show their support for Sarma.
