Guwahati: Gaurav Gogoi hammered both the state and central governments for failing to halt the border dispute with Nagaland. The Assam Congress president visited the contested Mariani border region in Jorhat, claiming land encroachment continues to plague local residents. He accused officials of allowing the boundary to shift despite a pending case before the Supreme Court.
Residents reported frequent aggression from the Nagaland side. They claim Nagaland officials built a bridge on Assam soil back in 2020. When locals recently tried to clear nearby access roads, people from the Nagaland side blocked the work. Gogoi demanded to know if the BJP government already handed over this land.
"The response of both the Assam government and the Centre has been deeply disappointing," Gogoi said. He pledged Congress party support for any real effort to defend the border. The two states share a 512-km line that has been contested since Nagaland formed in 1963. Official government reports claim Nagaland currently holds 59,490 hectares of Assam land, marking it the state's largest territorial loss.
