Guwahati: Gaurav Gogoi toured the Assam-Nagaland border in Mariani on June 30, blasting the state and central governments for failing to halt territorial encroachment. The Congress MP claimed that local residents face constant aggression while the authorities stand by, leaving the future of the border in limbo ahead of a Supreme Court ruling.
Gogoi raised concerns that the BJP-led government in Assam might have already surrendered land to Nagaland. He pointed to a bridge constructed by the Nagaland administration inside Assam back in 2020. Tensions remain high in the region. Recent attempts by locals to clear roads near the bridge under a Job Card scheme were blocked by individuals from the Nagaland side.
"The people living along the border have been facing aggression from the Nagaland side for years. Unfortunately, the response of both the Assam and Central governments has been deeply unsatisfactory," Gogoi said.
The border dispute dates back to 1963, when Nagaland was carved out of Assam. The two states share a 512-kilometre boundary. Official data shows roughly 59,490 hectares of Assam land remain under alleged encroachment by Nagaland. The case stays tied up in court, but Gogoi insisted that the Congress would keep pushing to protect the state territorial integrity.
