Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court is scheduled to hear the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta on May 25 regarding the high-profile death case of Zubeen Garg. This marks the third round of arguments for the application, which has drawn intense public interest across Assam over the last several weeks.
During previous hearings on May 15 and May 22, Justice Mitali Thakuria reviewed arguments from both sides. Representing the defendant, senior advocate Pran Bora argued that the death was an unfortunate accident rather than a criminal act. The defense team also pointed to statements recorded by the Special Investigation Team, claiming these documents support Mahanta’s innocence and justify his release.
The upcoming session is expected to feature the state’s counterarguments, as prosecutors look to challenge the request for bail. Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia is set to lead the state’s legal team, reflecting the government's high level of focus on the proceedings. The court’s final decision on this matter is expected to significantly influence the direction of the ongoing case.
