Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court reserved its order on the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta following the conclusion of arguments regarding the death of singer Zubeen Garg. Justice Mitali Thakuria heard the final submissions on Monday, marking the third round of legal arguments in a case that has captured significant public interest in Assam. The court is expected to deliver its decision on May 29, though officials noted the ruling could be delayed by a few days.
During the proceedings, defense counsel Pran Bora argued that Garg's death was an accident rather than a deliberate criminal act. Mahanta’s legal team emphasized statements recorded before the Special Investigation Team to support his claims of innocence and cited various judicial precedents to press for his release. They maintained that their client should not face criminal responsibility for the incident.
Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia countered these arguments on behalf of the state, urging the court to deny the application. Additional public prosecutor Bojendro Mohan Choudhury confirmed that the prosecution strongly opposed the bail request, citing the nature of the case. The court has now concluded the hearing phase and will finalize its verdict later this month.
