Garo Hills to Get First Doppler Weather Radar for Disaster Alerts

Shillong: Garo Hills officials picked Albella Chidekgre in the Rongram block as the location for the region's first Doppler Weather Radar. This ends years of relying on broad, inaccurate weather forecasts. Work follows a final inspection conducted on Wednesday by experts from the India Meteorological Department, local disaster management teams, and contractors from Pattern India Limited.

Flash floods hit hard here. The area needs better protection. This project falls under the national Mission Mausam initiative, designed to scrub out weather-blind spots across the Northeast. It catches micro-climatic shifts that standard monitoring stations miss.

Local leaders helped seal the deal. Community backing is the bedrock of the project. A local resident noted that people in Rongram, who have long feared the unpredictable monsoon cycles, view the radar as a vital defense against sudden natural disasters. Installation work begins soon. Once active, the radar will deliver precision data for village-level alerts, finally fixing a massive hole in the state's disaster safety net.
