Guwahati: Four students from Sankardev Shishu Niketan in Dimakuchi survived a near-fatal accident on the India-Bhutan border. The children were headed home from school in Assam's Udalguri district when they tried to cross the Shuklai River at Badlapara. Monsoon currents hit hard. The swollen water dragged the four students, their bicycles, and their school bags downstream, sparking immediate panic in the border village.
Nearby residents rushed to the riverbank to help. They pulled the children from the water and rushed them to a local hospital. Doctors report the students remain in stable condition. The rescue saved them, but local anger is growing.
