Guwahati: Police have arrested four employees at the Sribhumi district jail in Assam following an investigation into the smuggling of narcotics and communication devices. The crackdown began after a surprise inspection on February 2 revealed 29 mobile phones, alongside SIM cards and chargers, hidden throughout the facility.
Authorities took assistant jailers Rudra Deori and Subhasish Ghosh, as well as warders Masid Ali Laskar and Biswajit Baruah, into custody. Investigators linked the staff members to the illicit operation after intelligence reports indicated that inmates were using the devices to coordinate criminal activities with outside contacts.
Officials scrutinized call records and conducted extensive questioning to uncover how these items bypassed security protocols. Regarding the investigation, authorities stated that "interrogation of the accused is ongoing" while they probe for a larger network responsible for supplying the contraband. The prison administration is currently implementing measures to tighten security and block future attempts to smuggle prohibited items into the jail.
