Agartala: Five Tripura Police officers are receiving the Medal for Meritorious Service for their professional dedication. The honors arrive as part of the Independence Day 2026 celebrations.
The department selected Superintendent of Police Amitabha Pal, Havildar Sishu Ranjan Chowdhury, Subedar Sanjib Patra, Naik Md Maharam Ali, and Constable Mrinal Debbarma for the recognition. This group represents the state in a massive list of national honorees. Across the country, 1,057 personnel from police, fire, home guard, and correctional services earned medals for gallantry and service.
Official records show 92 people will receive the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. The police account for 83 of those, followed by four in Fire Services, three in Civil Defence and Home Guard, and two in Correctional Services. Furthermore, 664 individuals are getting the Medal for Meritorious Service. The police branch leads that category with 606 recipients, while the fire, home guard, and correctional branches make up the remaining 58 awards. The state government stated the recognition "highlights their dedicated service and adds to the force’s record of professional and meritorious contributions."

The Ministry of Home Affairs released the state-wise allocation, which formalizes the selection process for the five Tripura officers. Officials noted the recognition aims to boost morale across the ranks, pushing for higher standards of professionalism among the force.
National data shows a slightly different breakdown for the 664 Meritorious Service medals than previously noted. Beyond the 606 police recipients, the fire services account for 28 awards, while civil defence and home guard units hold 18. Correctional services round out the list with 12.
