FCI Driver Killed in Suspected Militant Ambush on National Highway 202

Imphal: A Food Corporation of India driver was killed and a police officer injured following an ambush by suspected Kuki militants on National Highway 202 in Manipur. The attack took place at approximately 11 am near Yaolen village in the Ukhrul district. The driver, believed to be from West Bengal, died at the scene, though authorities have yet to confirm his identity.

The injured officer has been identified as Constable Disingam Maringmei of the Ukhrul Police Station. Security forces arrived at the site shortly after the shooting, and additional personnel were deployed to the area to stabilize the situation. The highway serves as a vital transport link between Imphal, Ukhrul, and Kamjong.

This marks the third violent incident in the area since February. Earlier this month, two civilians were killed in a similar ambush, and another policeman was wounded while returning from duty at Litan Police Station. Local residents and commuters have expressed alarm over the frequent violence along the route.

Tensions remained high throughout the day as Kuki community women staged a blockade at Sangkhai Kuki village starting at 9 am. The protest, organized by the Kuki Inpi Manipur to demand the release of hostages, forced security forces to use tear gas and mock bombs to clear the road. Reports also indicated gunfire was heard later in the vicinity of TM Kasom village.
