Families keep vigil at JNIMS as justice stalls for slain villagers

Imphal: Families and supporters gathered outside the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) on Tuesday. They lit candles in the dark. It has been 20 days since the six bodies arrived at the morgue. The dead remain unburied.

Relatives and the JNIMS Relief Committee hold these nightly vigils to demand results. They refuse to claim the bodies or hold funerals until the state catches the killers. Chongtham Sana, co-convenor of the committee, stated that families "have refused to claim the bodies or perform the last rites until those responsible for the killings are arrested and punished."

The victims were identified as Rev. Manu, P.R. Kenpibonu, Phenrongwibou, Delip, Kaliwangbou, and Phenrilungbou. Armed Kuki militants snatched 18 people from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13. The six men were later murdered. Searchers pulled their bodies from the ground on June 10.

The committee is pushing hard for a faster investigation. They want immediate arrests. Government officials face intense pressure to solve the case and provide answers for the grieving families.
