Guwahati: A man accused of pretending to be a doctor died in Kokrajhar jail on Tuesday. Rabindra Chandra Nag passed away after suffering a sudden medical crisis behind bars. He was only 5 days into his judicial custody.

Kajalgaon police picked up Nag on June 25. The Assam Council of Medical Registration filed the initial complaint against him. Officers caught him in Dhaligaon and sent him straight to the lockup after a court appearance.

Jail staff noticed Nag struggling early Tuesday morning. They rushed the prisoner to Kokrajhar Medical College in a desperate bid to save his life. The facility reported that he suffered a heart issue. Officials said, "Despite medical intervention, he succumbed at around 7:30 am."

Authorities are now working through the legal steps that follow any death in custody. An administrative review remains ahead.
