Kohima: A delegation from the Ex-Servicemen League Nagaland (ESMLN) met with Governor Nand Kishore Yadav at Raj Bhavan on June 8 to push for improvements in the welfare of retired military personnel. Led by President Veteran Maj Vikuto Asumi, the group detailed several administrative and logistical failures currently impacting veterans across the state.
The league reported that the Rajya Sainik Board and Zila Sainik Boards have failed to finalize staff recruitment despite publishing advertisements in February 2025. They also expressed frustration regarding alleged deviations from appointment protocols and extended service tenures for current staff. Furthermore, the delegation requested that the state finally implement a 2003 Police Headquarters order mandating a five percent job reservation for ex-servicemen within the police department.
Healthcare remains a primary concern for the community due to a severe lack of empanelled private hospitals under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme. Veterans are frequently forced to travel outside Nagaland for medical care, leading the league to suggest adopting a Gujarat-style model that requires private hospitals to join the scheme during their licensing process. The delegation also sought special provisions for gun licences to aid veterans in securing security-sector employment.
The group noted that the absence of official meetings since January 2020 has hindered progress on these issues. Following the discussion, the ESMLN stated that the "Governor gave a patient hearing to the delegation's representations and assured all possible support." Maj Asumi thanked the Governor for his response and pledged the organization's continued cooperation with the state government.
