Guwahati: Three retired officials want Assamese included in all public announcements at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Former Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, along with retired officers Jyotirmoy Chakraborty and Mukul Chandra Gogoi, sent a formal demand to the Chief Airport Officer on June 26.
Terminal 2 currently broadcasts messages only in English and Hindi. The group argues this ignores the primary regional language used across the Northeast. They contend that ditching Assamese ignores Ministry of Civil Aviation directives meant to prioritize local languages.
Safety is the primary driver for the change. The signatories believe passengers need clear, local-language instructions to act fast if a disaster hits. The group warned that language barriers could turn minor hiccups into major catastrophes. They stated, "In the event of an emergency within the terminal or on board an aircraft, clear and immediate communication in the regional language is crucial to ensure that passengers fully understand and promptly comply with safety instructions."
Airport brass must now respond to the complaint. The retired officials expect full compliance with government guidelines to ensure no passenger gets left behind during a crisis.
