Guwahati: Enforcement Directorate teams hit six locations across Assam's Barak Valley on Wednesday. The morning raids targeted suspected players in the illegal Burmese areca nut trade. Federal investigators searched five sites in Cachar district and one in Hailakandi. The operation focused on the homes and businesses of local individuals. Agents targeted the Hospital Road home of Deepankar Dey and the Leather Warehouse premises of trader Zakir Talukdar. Another location in Hailakandi also faced scrutiny.
The push follows an earlier search at the Itkhola home of Abu Majumdar in Silchar. Investigators allegedly hauled a diary out of that property. Sources said the book held the keys to the entire operation. According to reports, "The diary is suspected to contain details and names of individuals linked to the alleged trade." Officials analyzed those notes and expanded the scope of their inquiry to the fresh sites. The agency has kept quiet about the results. No seizures or arrests have been announced yet.
