Itanagar: Deputy Commissioner Sonalika Jiwani chaired the 21st monthly District NCORD meeting in East Siang to address rising concerns over drug abuse, alcoholism, and related social challenges. The session brought together Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba and representatives from several key departments to evaluate ongoing enforcement efforts and community rehabilitation programs.
Authorities reported significant progress in local crackdown operations. Joint teams involving the police, district administration, and tax departments conducted raids that resulted in the seizure of various illegal liquor and narcotic products. Additionally, teams from the Forest and District Administration departments successfully targeted and destroyed wild cannabis crops across Pasighat.
A major focus of the meeting remained the enforcement of the COTPA Act. Officials have directed the Education Department to identify and map zones where tobacco products are sold within 500 metres of schools to ensure strict compliance with the law. The administration is also targeting illegal gambling and unauthorized alcohol sales to reduce their profitability.
To support long-term recovery, the district is promoting vocational training for residents in rehabilitation. Recovering addicts are now eligible for courses in mushroom cultivation, electrical work, and computer skills. Deputy Commissioner Jiwani urged officials to keep youth engaged through sports and educational campus visits. Superintendent Lamba added that the district will use media platforms to share recovery success stories and increase public awareness about the support services available at the seven operational de-addiction centres.
