Kohima: The Dimapur Lotha Students Union (DLSU) is calling on local authorities to strictly enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2003. The union specifically targets the illegal sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of schools and colleges in Dimapur.
DLSU president Mhonbemo M Kikon and vice president Thungbemo W Kikon voiced serious concerns regarding the accessibility of tobacco for students. The leaders stated that "protecting students from the harmful effects of tobacco requires cooperation among government agencies, parents, community leaders and civil society." They argue that these products pose significant health risks and undermine the goal of maintaining a safe learning environment.
The union expects the district administration, law enforcement, and municipal authorities to monitor the area and take swift action against any violators. Additionally, the DLSU has urged shop owners and vendors to prioritize student welfare and comply with legal regulations. The organization emphasized that educational institutions must be strictly maintained as tobacco free zones to ensure the well being of the student population.
