Dimapur Students Union Demands Arrest Over Leaked Minor Victim Identity

Kohima: The Dimapur Eastern Nagaland Students Union (DENSU) is demanding the arrest of the sister of primary suspect Watimeren Jamir, also known as O Wati Jamir, for allegedly circulating a video that exposed the identity of a 14-year-old sexual assault survivor. During a solidarity rally at the Dimapur Town Hall on June 9, union leaders argued that distributing the footage violated the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

DENSU General Secretary Sheren Shiu stated, "In the POCSO Act, it is clearly written that the identity of the victim... must not be disclosed, and disclosing it is punishable according to the law." The union insists that the sister must be interrogated and held accountable for the breach.

While three suspects are already in custody, including a 68-year-old village headman from the Residency colony, union members maintain that the investigation must expand. DENSU President Thongule Sangtam noted that the union accurately predicted there were three culprits despite initial claims from other entities that there were only two. The union is now pushing for a state-level Special Investigation Team monitored directly by the Director General of Police to replace the existing district-level inquiry.

Beyond the immediate criminal case, the union is addressing the broader issue of children from the Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organization bloc working as domestic help in Dimapur. They are urging families to register children with the union to ensure safety and proper verification. Meanwhile, tensions have risen between DENSU and other organizations, with union leadership expressing feelings of betrayal after being excluded from a collaborative awareness event held on the same day.
