Dimapur Student Union Demands Crackdown on Illegal Proxy Land Deals

Kohima: The Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) has issued a stern warning against the practice of local residents acting as proxies to register land for non-indigenous individuals. The union stated that these benami transactions bypass existing legal protections, including the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, and threaten the long-term rights of indigenous communities to their ancestral property.

Highlighting the cultural significance of the region, the union emphasized that land acts as a pillar of identity and heritage rather than a simple commodity. The organization is now urging the district administration and revenue authorities to launch a formal investigation into suspected illegal land transfers. Specifically, the DNSU called for a probe into land records linked to individuals identified as Nirmal Jain and Girdharlal Sharma.

To combat these practices, the union is calling on village councils, colony authorities, and local leaders to increase oversight. They have requested that these officials verify all ownership claims and NOC applications to identify any potential proxy arrangements. The group also warned brokers and middlemen against facilitating these deals, vowing to hold participants accountable through legal means.

The union expressed its readiness to assist law enforcement in conducting an impartial review of all questionable property acquisitions. Addressing the urgency of the situation, the DNSU stated, "The protection of our land is the protection of our identity, our future, and our collective rights."
