Kohima: The Centre for Development Initiatives in Dimapur observed International Domestic Workers Day on June 16 at the Zeliangrong Village Community Hall. Held under the theme of recognizing the rights, dignity, and work of domestic employees, the event focused on the vital contributions these workers make to the economy through caregiving and home management.
Thiuswangwiliu, a panel lawyer for the District Legal Services Authority, addressed the gathering to explain the legal protections available to workers. She noted that free legal aid and counseling are accessible to those facing financial or social hardships. She urged attendees to reject harassment and exploitation, stating: "Domestic workers play a vital role in strengthening the economy through caregiving, housekeeping and home management, enabling employers to pursue professional responsibilities."
The session covered essential guidance on workplace rights, including the importance of formal employment agreements to outline wages, working hours, and leave. Legal experts also reminded employers that hiring children under the age of 14 for domestic work is illegal. Workers were encouraged to utilize government healthcare benefits and were informed of a Supreme Court ruling that sets a baseline value of Rs. 30,000 per month for accident compensation claims involving domestic workers and homemakers.
