Kohima: The District Disaster Management Authority in Dimapur issued a blunt safety warning today. Do not enter wells. Two people died on October 6, 2026, while cleaning a deep ringwell at a home in Oriental Colony. Another man, aged 35, died in a ringwell at Darogapathar on October 9. Authorities suspect he suffocated after breathing methane gas trapped in the confined space.
Wells often hide deadly secrets. They frequently hold low oxygen levels or toxic gases that kill without warning. The DDMA explicitly warned residents against untrained rescue attempts, noting that anyone jumping in to help an unconscious person often becomes another victim. The agency urged the public to hire trained crews for any cleaning or repair work. Before anyone goes down, teams must test the air and ensure proper ventilation.
A lack of bad odors does not mean the air is safe. "No cleaning or maintenance work was worth risking a human life," the DDMA stated. Keep children and onlookers away from these sites to prevent accidental falls. In a crisis, call the SDRF at 7005806182 or the DDMA at 8131924008. Keep the area clear so rescue workers can actually do their jobs.
