Guwahati: The Dibrugarh district administration will relocate the local bus and traveller stand to the Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus (MJBT) starting June 19, 2026. This move aims to improve road safety and reduce traffic bottlenecks caused by major infrastructure work across the city. Under the new mandate, buses are prohibited from operating beyond the MJBT terminal, though school and college transportation services remain exempt from these restrictions.
This decision follows warnings from the Public Works Roads Department regarding the construction of the Amulapatty Flyover. Officials noted that the project will likely increase traffic density and accident risks. The department specified that planned service roads are only appropriate for light vehicles and motorcycles, necessitating a move to restrict heavy transit within city limits. Ongoing work on the Mancotta Road Railway Over Bridge has already significantly hindered the movement of heavy vehicles.
The Regional Transport Authority finalized the shift during a June 10 meeting to address road safety directives and current infrastructure challenges. Members agreed that current bus stops along the State Highway lack the necessary infrastructure to manage passenger volume safely. The administration emphasized that the regulation of transit is a priority, stating that the "movement of buses and travellers within the city should be regulated in the interest of public safety and traffic management."
Local authorities are coordinating a smooth transition through a joint effort between the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation, the District Transport Office, and the traffic police. The district will provide feeder services to help passengers reach the new terminal, and officials plan to release updated route maps soon. Failure to comply with these new regulations will result in penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
