Guwahati: The Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation launched a widespread eviction drive on June 7 to remove unauthorized structures and businesses occupying public spaces. Officials initiated the operation after the formal notice period for illegal occupants and vendors to vacate roadside areas expired.
Authorities stated that while street vending is permitted in the town, current practices have caused significant issues. The civic body noted that vendors occupying footpaths and roadside spaces have created traffic congestion and inconvenience for pedestrians and commuters. Municipal officials emphasized that they have already established dedicated Vending Zones to accommodate these businesses, yet many operators continue to occupy busy commercial areas.
Local residents have frequently expressed frustration regarding the blocked pedestrian pathways and the impact on daily traffic flow. In response to these concerns, the corporation demolished temporary shops and structures encroaching on public land. A representative from the civic body stated, "The Municipal Corporation has already allotted designated Vending Zones at different locations in the town to accommodate street vendors." The operation marks a major effort by the local government to restore order to the town centre and ensure public spaces remain accessible.
