Guwahati: Anger is boiling over in Assam's Dhubri district. Locals claim a massive illegal betting racket, known as Teer, runs unchecked in town squares and rural villages. Betting tickets are sold in broad daylight despite constant complaints to local authorities. Police are doing next to nothing. Residents say law enforcement personnel recently posed as porters to watch the crime instead of stopping it.
The archery-based gambling system has spread deep into Majerchar and the Chalakura village panchayat. Journalists even caught the transactions on video. The racket targets daily-wage earners and the youth, bleeding them dry. Families are drowning in debt. The financial damage is hitting the poorest people the hardest.
"Teer gambling has brought absolute darkness into the lives of our young generation and the poorest people of our society. They lose their hard-earned money daily, driving families into debt and ruin," said local resident Shimul Satkar. Community leaders want the State Home Department to step in now. They demand an immediate crackdown to stop the misery and fix the broken public trust.
