Guwahati: The endangered Asiatic wild dog, or dhole, has returned to Assam's Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong landscape after a long absence. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the development, describing the presence of an entire pack as a significant ecological milestone for the region.

Conservationists first detected the predator's presence through a lone camera trap image in 2022. Subsequent monitoring and direct sightings eventually led to the recent confirmation of a full pack roaming the area. Officials view this resurgence as clear evidence that local conservation strategies are working effectively.

The return of this apex predator is attributed to ongoing efforts to expand forest cover and reconnect wildlife habitats. By clearing encroached lands and protecting natural corridors, the state has helped create a healthier, more balanced ecosystem. As one of Asia's most endangered carnivores, the dhole serves as a vital indicator of the region's recovering biodiversity.
