Dadenggre residents protest against power utility firm

Shillong: Residents of Dadenggre in the West Garo Hills joined local leaders and community representatives on Thursday to protest against the current state of electricity services. The group gathered to demand that the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) resume control of local power distribution, replacing the current private operator, SAI Computers Limited.

The demonstration was prompted by ongoing frustrations regarding poor service quality paired with rising costs. Consumers allege that their monthly electricity bills have surged two to three times higher since SAI Computers Limited took over operations, yet the quality of power supply has remained consistently inadequate.

The rally began at the Dadenggre bazaar and moved toward the local MePDCL office, where participants voiced their grievances through slogans. Expressing their firm stance, the protestors stated, "The SAI Computers Limited should discontinue supplying power to the area. We want the MePDCL to take charge of power supply once again."

Following the demonstration, the community members resolved to formalize their complaints. They plan to submit a detailed memorandum regarding the situation to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in the near future.
