Guwahati: An Assistant Sub-Inspector killed two fellow officers and wounded a third before taking his own life at a CRPF camp in Assam on August 4. The bloodshed broke out around 7 am at the 34 Battalion camp in Katimari, Nagaon district. ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, triggered the chaos after he was reportedly found without his service weapon while stationed at the main gate. He grabbed an INSAS rifle from the guard room and moved toward the rear of the Quarter Guard.
Premabaram first opened fire on Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who died at the scene. He then shot SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who was visiting the camp for document verification. Yadav also died instantly. The shooter then turned his weapon on ASI Mane Govind Sripul of the B/171 Battalion. Sripul survived the attack and remains under medical care at Dew Care Hospital. Premabaram retreated to the B/171 Battalion barrack after the shootings and ended his own life. He died on the spot.
Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramita Sarkar confirmed local police and senior CRPF brass rushed to the camp. Officials have tightened security while investigators piece together the timeline. Forensic experts are currently reconstructing the event. The bodies were moved for post-mortem examinations. Authorities have not established a clear motive for the attack.
The military is running an internal inquiry alongside the police probe. Investigators are digging into the officer’s recent assignments, his interactions with coworkers, and any potential professional friction. "Officials have urged people not to speculate until the inquiry is completed." Both the police and CRPF will review weapon-handling protocols and camp security measures as the investigation continues.
