Guwahati: A CRPF officer slaughtered two colleagues and wounded a third before killing himself on Tuesday morning. The bloodshed erupted at the 34 Battalion camp in Katimari, Nagaon district. It began around 7 a.m. local time.
ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, had been assigned to the main gate. Witnesses found him missing his service weapon. He grabbed an INSAS rifle from the guard room instead. Premabaram stalked toward the rear of the Quarter Guard to start the attack.
He shot Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who died from his wounds. Next, he opened fire on SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav. Yadav had arrived at the base for document verification and died at the scene. Premabaram then shot ASI/Mane Govind Sripul of the 171 Battalion. Sripul survived the initial blast and went to Dew Care Hospital for emergency treatment.
The gunman retreated into the 171 Battalion barracks after the rampage. He turned his rifle on himself and died instantly. Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramita Sarkar confirmed the sequence of events. Police and forensic experts are now combing the site for evidence.
Investigators are analyzing Premabaram’s recent assignments and his past interactions with coworkers. They want to know why this happened. Official statements remain guarded regarding a specific reason for the violence. "Authorities said the identities of the deceased personnel would be formally disclosed after their families are informed and necessary procedures are completed," according to reports.
Security forces have tightened the perimeter while the CRPF launches an internal probe. The inquiry will review camp security, weapon handling, and administrative factors. Forensic teams are currently reconstructing the morning's movements to finalize their reports.
