Guwahati: Elephant Monitors Assam wants a sanctuary for the state's retired and injured captive elephants. They sent a proposal to Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on June 19. It aims to build the Northeast's first shelter for animals discarded by owners or sold illegally.

The plan calls for 50 bighas of land near a forest. It would house ten elephants at first. The group estimates needing two vets and 15 caretakers to manage the site. Monthly costs should hit 3 lakh rupees for food and medical care. The group remains hopeful, stating, "We hope that under your able leadership, the Forest Ministry and the Assam Government would give serious thought to our proposal."

Separately, the group demands help for an injured wild elephant named Durga. She roams near the Bokial Forest Beat Office in Golaghat. Experts fitted her with a 20-kilogram radio collar in 2023. The device now restricts her movement and causes pain. EMA has reported the issue to local officials since March 2026 without a response. They want the Forest Minister to intervene now because Schedule I species require protection under the Wildlife Protection Act.
