Kohima: Various organizations and youth groups across Nagaland celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 by launching community-led conservation projects. Participants engaged in cleanup drives and massive tree planting efforts to address local environmental concerns and climate change.
The Angami Students’ Union collaborated with the Chakhroma Students’ Union to host a cleanliness drive at their branch office in Chümoukedima. The event focused on waste removal to promote civic responsibility. During the cleanup, Viketouzo Yashü, Environment and Sanitation Secretary for the ASU, encouraged local residents to adopt sustainable routines. He made a fervent appeal to all citizens of Chümoukedima and beyond to adopt simple, environment-friendly habits in daily life.
In the Phek district, the Naga People’s Front organized a tree plantation initiative at Sezü Bridge near Thenyizu village. Former MLA and senior party official Nuzota Swuro highlighted the dangers of forest fires and resource depletion, noting that Nagaland faces significant pressure from human activity despite its rich biodiversity. The group planted roughly 600 saplings along NH-702A to promote long-term conservation.
Separately, the Kiruphema Youth Organisation carried out a plantation drive along national highways and local approach roads. Operating under the theme Plant Trees, Eliminate Global Warming, the group partnered with local church departments and forestry officials to ensure the success of the project. Each organization reaffirmed its dedication to ongoing environmental preservation and the pursuit of a cleaner future for the region.
