Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation hit former Assam Police DIG Prashanta Kumar Dutta hard this week. Agents attached 53 crore worth of assets linked to the ex-officer. They claim he built this fortune illegally between 1992 and 2019.

The agency seized several hotels in Guwahati. These include Hotel Bhargav and Bhargav Inn in Paltan Bazar, another Hotel Bhargav in Lakhra, and Bhargav Grand in Betkuchi. Investigators also secured two high-value buildings in Mumbai.

Dutta is no stranger to scandal. He was the prime suspect in the massive Assam Police Sub-Inspector recruitment paper leak. The CBI stated the current action serves as part of its ongoing investigation into allegations that "Dutta amassed wealth beyond legitimate income sources" during his time in the department.

He lost his job following the recruitment controversy. West Bengal Police caught him near the Indo-Nepal border in October 2020 after he spent months on the run. Federal investigators are now digging through his financial history to track down every cent of his alleged illicit gains.
