CBI Nabs NHAI Director Over 12 Lakh Bribe Demand

Shillong: The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Aanand Singh Chauhan, the Project Director for the National Highways Authority of India in Shillong. Agents from the Anti-Corruption Branch in Guwahati took him into custody following bribery allegations. Chauhan allegedly demanded 12 lakh rupees from a contractor to process an outstanding bill worth 13.38 crore rupees.

He demanded 4 lakh rupees up front. The official ordered the contractor to deliver the bribe to a man named Punit in Guwahati. Investigators claim the scheme used shady methods to move the cash. Chauhan sent the contractor a picture of a 10 rupee note via WhatsApp. He told the contractor to use the note's serial number as a token to send 12 lakh rupees to Jaipur through hawala channels.

He provided a contact name, Meena, to handle the illicit funds at the destination. The CBI detained two individuals involved in the scheme. Both suspects are currently on a two-day remand. Agency officials stated: "The two accused have been arrested and are on two-day CBI remand to enable the agency to carry out further investigation into the matter."
