Guwahati: The Burhi Dihing River is tearing through Assam. Villagers in Aghonibari, Secha Nepali, and No. 3 Shalguri are watching their land vanish. Hundreds of bighas of farmland are already gone. Now the water is closing in on the main embankment linking Aghonibari and Khowang.
The river front sits only 100 to 200 metres from the barrier. Locals face a grim reality. They spend their nights waiting for a collapse that threatens to flood the entire area. Farmers have lost their livelihoods as the banks crumble into the current.
Residents claim they repeatedly contacted the Water Resources Department. They report that officials have failed to act. The frustration is boiling over. "Locals alleged that they have repeatedly alerted the Water Resources Department about the worsening situation, but no effective anti-erosion measures have been undertaken so far."
The clock is ticking. People are demanding the Assam government move fast on permanent fixes. Delay means more lost land. It could mean the total destruction of homes and infrastructure in the path of the river.
