Brahmaputra Floods Force Guwahati Ferry Shutdown

Guwahati: Guwahati officials pulled the plug on all ferry services across the Brahmaputra River on June 24. Heavy monsoon rains and surging water levels made travel far too dangerous. The river is rising fast.

The Inland Water Transport Department confirmed the shutdown to prevent accidents. Strong currents now dominate the water. Thousands of daily commuters across the north and south banks are stranded without their usual transport.

The popular route to Umananda Temple is also closed. This island pilgrimage site relies entirely on boats for access. Officials made the call to protect everyone on board.

Operations will remain dark until the water drops back below the danger mark. The department stated, "Ferry operations will resume only after river conditions improve and navigation is deemed safe for passengers and vessels."

Commuters must find other routes. Keep a close watch on official updates for news on when the boats might run again.
