Brahmaputra erosion destroys farmland in Assam

Guwahati: The Brahmaputra River is tearing through Satbhendi village in Assam. High water levels are washing away acres of fertile soil every single day. The situation in Goalpara district is dire. Farmers are now rushing to harvest their jute crops before they sink into the mud.

The loss of standing crops has local families worried about their livelihoods. The erosion eats into the land, leaving residents helpless. "Several bighas of standing jute crop are disappearing into the river every day," locals said. People are scared.

The riverbank is creeping closer to a vital embankment. It sits barely 100 metres from the danger zone. If that wall fails, water will flood nearby villages and ruin more property. Residents blame the Water Resources Department for the current disaster.

The community claims officials have ignored years of warnings and failed to build real protection. They want permanent barriers installed immediately. Without help, these families face losing their homes and their future along the banks of the river.
