Bodo Language Removal Rumors Trigger Protests in Assam

Guwahati: Protesters flooded the streets of Kokrajhar on Friday. They rallied against reports claiming the Bodo language faced removal from the official Assam Legislative Assembly logo. Members of the All Bodo Students Union marched through town to voice their anger. They grabbed spray paint and blackened Assamese text on shop signs along J.D. Road.

The Bodo Sahitya Sabha joined the chorus of critics. President Gopinath Borgoyary warned that officials must consult the community before making sweeping changes. He insisted that unilateral action threatens local peace. Mononjoy Daimary, a leader for the students union, claimed the move insulted Bodo identity. He stated, "The organisation would not accept such a decision."

Rumors fueled the fire after media outlets suggested the language lacked formal approval from the General Purposes Committee. Officials eventually stepped in to kill the story. Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das denied any plans to drop Bodo from the logo. He confirmed the government actually intends to add Hindi to the existing mix of Assamese, English, and Bodo. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed this stance. He clarified that the state has no plans to pull the language from any official assembly business.
