Imphal: The BJP Mahila Morcha is taking to the streets. On October 11, party members will march to the Congress headquarters, Indira Bhawan, to protest the party's silence on sexual harassment allegations against Inner Manipur MP Prof Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. The demonstration begins at the Andhra Education Society School on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg and ends near ITO.
JNU's Internal Complaints Committee fired Akoijam on October 9. The committee found evidence he demanded sexual favors for marks, affecting 11 students. BJP Mahila Morcha president Rup Kumari Choudhary and national in-charge Daggubati Purandeswari will lead the charge. Thousands of workers, including women MPs and MLAs, will join them.
The BJP claims Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Mallikarjun Kharge are protecting the accused. They argue this behavior contradicts Gandhi's frequent calls for gender equality. "Does Rahul Gandhi, who keeps talking about 'smashing the patriarchy', not see the pain of these young women?" the BJP stated.
This protest is part of the Nari Shakti Hunkar Andolan. The BJP wants Gandhi to expel Akoijam, demand his resignation from the Lok Sabha, and apologize to the victims. The party also pointed to past controversies involving Congress figures. They cited the Tandoor murder, the Bhanwari Devi case, and accusations against B V Srinivas and former Rajasthan MLA Mewaram Jain to allege a recurring pattern of misconduct.
