Shillong: The Bharatiya Janata Party will ditch alliances to run solo in the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections. Senior MLA Alexander Laloo Hek confirmed the shift on July 8. He expects the party to seize control of the state government after the vote. Work has already started to beef up the party machine across the state.
Hek spoke to reporters about the party's future. "We will contest the 2028 Assembly elections on our own and we are confident of leading the next government," he said. The party now wants to establish itself as the primary political force in the region.
Hek turned down a bid to run in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. He cited his current workload as the reason for stepping aside. The veteran politician pointed to his full schedule of responsibilities. He suggested fellow MLA Sanbor Shullai as the replacement candidate instead.
The final call rests with the BJP national leadership. Hek stated that the state unit will stand behind whichever candidate the top brass picks. Party members plan to mount a heavy campaign once the name is official. They claim there is plenty of time to gear up for the fight.
