Imphal: A recent three-day bird census in the Shirui and Phangrei hill ranges of Manipur has documented 73 different bird species. Organized by the Ukhrul Forest Division, ENFOGAL, and the Department of Zoology at Pettigrew College, the survey counted 803 individual birds to provide a detailed look at the local avian population.

The technical team identified a wide variety of birds, including the black francolin, kalij pheasant, crested serpent eagle, and the common cuckoo. These findings will serve as essential baseline data for future ecological monitoring and biodiversity mapping in the district. The project also focused on education, as researchers and students utilized digital tools like eBird and Merlin Bird ID to sharpen their identification skills.

By involving students and conservationists, the initiative aimed to foster environmental stewardship ahead of the International Day for Biological Diversity. Divisional Forest Officer Laishram Gitla stated that the primary goal was to engage young people in wildlife protection, turning them into ambassadors for their region's natural heritage.
