Kohima: The Benreului Nkwa Kohima held its 53rd Lamsimngyi Festival on October 31 at The Garden in Kohima. Members gathered to honor their traditions and shared identity. It was a day for reconnection.
Rangumbuing Nsarangbe, Chairman of the Nagaland Board of School Education, spoke to the crowd. He pushed the younger generation to work hard and maintain discipline. He credited the elders for growing this annual event into a vital hub for the community to bond.
Er. Swarai Meru, Engineer in Chief of the PWD, also took the stage. He reminded the youth that their ancestors prioritized honesty and keeping their promises. He told the assembly, "Keeping one's word reflects not only one's true character but also demonstrates respect for the person to whom a promise has been made."
Meru warned that the native language risks extinction without active preservation. He urged parents to speak their dialect at home and read the Bible to their children in their mother tongue. These actions reinforce both culture and faith.
The event featured indigenous games, traditional attire contests, and wrestling matches for all ages. A traditional pork leg was gifted to a bride-to-be, symbolizing the deep respect and love binding the community together.
