Imphal: Sarangthem Nirupama, the fourth runner-up for Miss Universe India 2025, spent Saturday filling craters on the Sugnu-Lamda road in Manipur. The stretch between Wabagai Lamkhai and Sugnu was crumbling. It turned into a hazard for drivers and patients.
Nirupama, who lives in Kakching Khunou Lamaba Leikai, deployed a Tata tipper and a JCB to haul fill and level the damaged ground. She jumped into action after learning about the death of a local woman following childbirth. Residents claim the road conditions hampered her medical transport, though no official link confirms the road caused the fatality. The woman left behind four children, the youngest only four.
Local volunteers and the Khorsanthabi Apunba Meira Paibi assisted in the heavy labor. They focused on the worst sections of the path. Khorsanthabi Apunba Meira Paibi president Th. Kunjeshwori lauded the effort but insisted that state officials need to move beyond patch jobs to ensure a lasting fix.
Nirupama warned that her work is just a temporary stopgap. She remains frustrated by the lack of government progress. "The condition of the road is very bad. Office-goers, daily wage workers and patients depend on this road. The concerned authorities should take permanent measures to improve it," she stated.
